Welcome to the Severn Valley Railway Volunteer Liaison Office

Induction Course

All new volunteers are asked to attend an induction day when you will learn a little about the railway by visiting signal boxes, a motive power depot, maybe seeing how a station operates etc. During your Induction Day you will be made aware of basic safety aspects which are necessary to confirm to us and where possible placed in the department of your choice. We say 'where possible' because if, for example, you wish to become a signalman, ticket inspector etc., you will need to enter a training program. These are run at various intervals throughout the year and generally have waiting lists. Whilst you are waiting to attend a course we suggest you familiarize yourself with the railway by joining staff at one of our stations or some other department which will help you in this direction.
During your induction day you will be asked to undertake a Track Awareness Test which is necessary to confirm to us that you are aware of some of the hazards attaching to the railway and that you know the basic safety rules applying to all departments.
