Welcome to the Severn Valley Railway Volunteer Liaison Office

Station Staff

There is a constant need for station staff carrying out a variety of duties at all stations. Staff are always required to maintain buildings, work as booking office clerks, gardeners, platform staff and, in fact, become involved in every facet of station operation.

Whilst these jobs may not appear as glamorous as, say, firing or driving a locomotive, platform staff play a very important role on the railway. When dispatching a train great care has to be taken to ensure that it is safe to do so before giving the 'tip' to the guard. They have to be in a position to answer a variety of questions from the traveling public ranging from train times, history of the railway to the whereabouts of the 'facilities'.

To a great degree the booking office staff are the first point of contact for many of our passengers.
To a great degree platform staff are the entrance to the railway and very often the first contact passengers have apart from the booking office which is not so personal.
The appearance of our award winning stations plays a very important part in the preservation field. Great satisfaction can be achieved when a restoration project has been completed. A dress code applies.

Directing the Passengers is an important role of the Station Staff.
