Diesel locomotive engineering
The diesel locomotive activities on SVR are carried out by volunteers from the various locomotive support groups. The centre for this activity is the Traction Maintenance Depot (TMD) utilising a dedicated purpose built building and associated yard at Kidderminster. There is also some work carried out by specific locomotive groups at Bridgnorth. The SVR based diesel locomotives vary in size from small ‘industrial’ Ruston shunting locomotives, through the BR shunters up to the large diesel-electric and diesel hydraulic locomotives. The engineering activities range from routine day to day maintenance and servicing of locomotives, through to large scale mechanical and bodywork overhauls. Activities in the TMD take place throughout the week, most days throughout the year. A wide and diverse range of activities with equally diverse range of skill levels takes place, ranging from simple degreasing, cleaning and painting etc through to engine rebuilds, pipework, electrical work, welding, fabrication, bodywork and painting.

Skills/attributes needed

Whilst competences such as diesel engine fitting, bodywork repairs or vehicle painting are welcomed, the TMD can offer anyone with an interest in this form of traction an opportunity to volunteer, everyone has a skill set with skills that can easily be adapted to the needs of the locomotive groups. There is a place for everyone who has an aptitude to learn and follow instructions, the ability to work as part of a team and work in an organised manner are key attributes. Familiarity with hand held power tools and/or workshop machinery is a benefit but not essential as we instruct and train our volunteers.

Training

There are some areas that are mandatory such as health and safety and working at height but most training is lead by the volunteer’s interests and enthusiasm. The majority of training is on the job with a mentor but some will be more formal depending on the activity.
