Volunteering for 13 - 15 year olds

Joining the Junior Club

The Junior Club only admits new members who are 13 years old, and they then remain with the Junior Club until they are ready to join a Department, usually when they turn 16.

The group meets on selected Saturdays throughout the year and some mid-week days in the school holidays. They take part in activities such as helping out with events, or shadowing roles in various Departments so that they can decide where they might want to volunteer when they are older. For example, the Junior Club recently:

  • Helped with the Model Railway Exhibition in the Engine House

  • Spent a day in the Signalling School learning about signalling equipment and how trains are signalled safely between our six stations

  • Assisted in the on train buffets.

Post 16 they continue to be welcome at Junior Club activities, even if they have joined a department, and the more established juniors are also encouraged to be team leaders to assist the supervising adults.

Joining at 14 or 15 years old

There is no intake to the Junior Club at this stage, but we may be able to place the junior in a Department if we can allocate a mentor to comply with our safeguarding policy. This cannot always be done, but it is worth making the enquiry. All mentors are DBS checked.

How to apply

Applications should not be made before a junior is 12 years and 6 months – we do not operate a waiting list for anyone younger than this.

  • The junior's parent or guardian must complete the Junior Application Form

  • A member of the Volunteer Liaison Office at Bewdley Station will be in touch to discuss next steps

Please note, there is only a small intake to the Junior Club each year, and places for junior volunteers will also be very limited. We therefore cannot guarantee that an application will be successful.
