Arley station

Volunteer roles at Arley

Star of the big and small screen, Arley sits an idyllic position close to the River Severn and the footbridge over to the village of Upper Arley and the nearby Arboretum. Fabulous walks either side of the river to Bewdley and Highley make Arley a popular place for passengers to break their journey for walks, picnics and simply to relax.

Station staff work in a wide variety of roles; from platform duties and selling tickets; to restoring and maintaining the entire site including the extensive beautiful gardens.  To help fund all of this work volunteers run a small shop and tea room too.

The station is also the focal point for both Halloween and Christmas activities further adding to the variety of volunteering opportunities to look after this beautiful country station.

Gardening and Maintenance

Arley has extensive station gardens which need regular care to keep them looking at their best for visitors. More help is always welcome with the gardens and the ongoing upkeep of the station.

Platform staff

Platform staff help passengers and visitors to keep safe and enjoy their visit. Uniformed platform staff supervise passengers and work as train dispatchers. There is also the opportunity to work in the booking office selling tickets. Platform staff play an important role keeping the station looking tidy by assisting with cleaning such as emptying bins, sweeping platforms and ensuring toilets are clean and stocked.

Refreshments and sales shops

We have our recently refurbished Weighbridge Tea Rooms (on the site of the old Weighbridge) which is a welcoming little café serving hot and cold drinks, ice creams, pies, sandwiches and cakes. We also have a small station fund shop, both of which generate vital income to support the upkeep and maintenance of Arley station.

Signalling

Signalmen/Lady signalmen operate the signals and points from a signal box in order to control the movement of trains.

Arley is one of the three country signal boxes where new signalmen begin their signalling experience. It is slightly bigger and more complex  than Hampton Loade box.
