Volunteer roles at Hampton Loade
Hampton Loade is a picturesque rural station close to the banks of the River Severn, situated in the hamlet of Hampton and serving several local camping and caravan sites. The station’s tranquillity is only disturbed by the arrival and departure of trains, demonstrating its importance as a vital crossing place on this single track railway. If you’re looking for a peaceful place with a small, friendly volunteer community in the Shropshire countryside, this may be the spot for you!

Gardening and maintenance
If you have an interest in gardening, grounds maintenance, woodworking, painting or general purpose maintenance, we would love to hear from you. Despite being one of the smaller stations on the railway, Hampton Loade requires a huge effort to keep it looking brilliant, and more help is always very welcome.
Platform staff
Platform staff help passengers and visitors to keep safe and enjoy their visit. Uniformed platform staff supervise use of the foot crossing and work as train dispatchers. There is also the opportunity to work in the booking office selling tickets. Platform staff play an important role keeping the station looking tidy by assisting with cleaning such as emptying bins, sweeping platforms and ensuring toilets are clean and stocked.
Refreshment kiosk and sales shops
If you enjoy talking to people and making them smile, we have spaces available for volunteers to operate our refreshment kiosk and sales shops at Hampton Loade. The kiosk sells a small selection of hot and cold drinks plus snacks and ice creams. Our sales shops are vital for fundraising to help with upkeep of the station and sell a variety of second-hand books, models, railwayana and bric-a-brac.
Signalling
Signalmen/Lady signalmen operate the signals and points from a signal box in order to control the movement of trains.
Hampton Loade signal box is one of the boxes where new signalmen start their signalling experience. It's the smallest box on the line, but crossing two trains at once in a short loop can still be challenging!
