Volunteer roles at Highley
Situated midway along the line, Highley is home to the Engine House Visitor Centre, which houses railway-related exhibits showcasing the Railway's history and heritage. Many of our passengers alight here to spend time at the Engine House or gain access to the riverside walks towards Arley or the Severn Valley Country Park.

Highley station is a splendid Victorian sandstone building looking out over the tranquil valley of the River Severn. Its picturesque scenery and period authenticity has led to it being used for a number of television and film locations. On quiet days, the station can be run by a single member of the platform staff, but it can get hectic on gala days or when there are special events at the Engine House and many more staff are then needed to ensure the safety of the passengers and the efficient running of the train service.
Platform staff
Highley is often thronging with visitors, and its platform staff are kept busy assisting passengers and dispatching trains.
Signalling
Signalmen/Lady signalmen operate the signals and points from a signal box in order to control the movement of trains.

Highley signal box is one of the boxes where new signalmen start their signalling experience. It can be easier to operate than the crossing boxes on a quiet timetable, but becomes a lot more challenging when traffic needs to use the sidings!
