Volunteer roles at Bewdley

Bewdley Station is at the heart of the Severn Valley Railway’s operations as the epitome of a traditional Country Junction Station. Situated within a short walk of the glorious River Severn and the historic centre of the town, the station is embedded into the community it serves.

A popular location choice for makers of period films, Bewdley Station oozes the characteristics of the steam age with sympathetically restored period buildings and the many small details that add to the atmosphere.

If you would like to join the diverse team of volunteers who operate and maintain a great example of living history please contact the Volunteer Liaison Office to arrange an informal on-site conversation. You will be very welcome.

Variety is the spice of life!

If you would like to join us at Bewdley Station, but want the maximum variety from your volunteering, none of our roles are exclusive - for example, you can combine platform duties with some maintenance work and time serving in the shop.

Platform staff

Uniformed Platform Staff add to the period ambience of the station, but crucially ensure that our visitors can safely enjoy their visit to the Severn Valley Railway. Whether answering visitors’ questions, dispatching trains or helping our less able visitors to access their trains, our Platform Staff are very much “front of house”.  The roles are defined as “safety critical” and as you would expect full training, support and supervision are provided.

Platform Staff also play an important role in keeping the station looking neat and tidy by emptying litter bins, re-stocking the toilets sweeping the platforms and even wiping down the platform seats after that occasional shower!

Maintenance and gardening

The volunteers who work so hard to keep the station attractive and in good repair come with a wide range of skills and interests. Some are not particularly railway enthusiasts, but relish pursuing personal interests which range from gardening, painting, woodworking and the restoration of period artifacts. These roles offer a high degree of flexibility and are not dependant on timetabled train services.

Catering

This busy and popular buffet serves refreshments to the many volunteers who work at the station as well as to the travelling public.

Retail

The Bewdley Station Shop is the primary source of funds for the improvement and maintenance of the Station. The shop offers a wide range of good quality souvenirs together with delicacies from local suppliers. It is licenced to sell alcohol and operates a beer tent during special events, while also offering hot and cold drinks, ice creams and confectionary.

If you like meeting people and making them smile, then this could be the role for you.

Locomotive crew

Many of our locomotive drivers start their volunteer days as a Cleaner at Bewdley MPD, and work their way up to Fireman before finally  qualifying as a Driver. Crews from here usually operate any steam train movements originating from Kidderminster or Bewdley.

Signalling

Signalmen/Lady signalmen operate the signals and points from a signal box in order to control the movement of trains.

Bewdley has 2 signal boxes on site, operating some of our most complex signalling.  People don't usually start at a Bewdley box, they progress here after working at other boxes for a while.

Carriage restoration

Bewdley carriage works helps to maintain our fleet of operational carriages. Typical jobs involve repairing doors and windows, re-upholstering seats, and fixing plumbing issues.
